      <image:title>Tuition</image:title>
<image:caption>I have been having online jazz piano lessons (and some face-to-face lessons) with Dave for six years, since I was twelve. I have taken ABRSM Grade 5 jazz piano and LCM Grade 8 jazz piano, and for both exams I achieved Distinction. I can now improvise fluently from ‘lead sheet’ music and have a sound understanding of jazz chords and scales. We also turn pop songs in to jazzy piano solos through the discussion of style and scale choices. I find that his explanations about the history of jazz and the composers we're studying are presented in an interesting, story-like way, which I enjoy. Dave has mentored me through these years, and I have grown in confidence. He has helped me with my school music studies and my compositions, as well as preparing for university interviews. I have now played at a local restaurant and also play for a male voice choir. I am looking forward to studying music at university and joining their jazz band. <image:title>Tuition - “I had been playing the piano for years, but I started lessons with Dave to expand my skills and learn some jazz. Initially in person but more recently online, which works a lot better than I imagined. And wow, what a journey it's been! Dave has taught me so much about chords, scales, improvisation, and how to put these things together to sound good! He has helped me with everything from jazz standards to Chopin Nocturnes, pop covers, recording, and more. He's a talented player and composer, and as a teacher he is kind, encouraging, endlessly patient, and super knowledgeable. He has an enthusiasm for music that is very contagious. I can't recommend him enough!”</image:title>

<image:title>Tuition - “I have had the privilege of being a student of Dave Jones for about 18 months. During the pandemic this has been a mixture of online and face to face lessons. When I first met this modest and amiable man, he took the time to learn about me and my goals before helping me to plot a way to reach each one. I was a complete beginner and Dave has demonstrated infinite patience with my attempts to assimilate his teachings. His guidance and focused tuition have helped me to progress and I find myself starting on the ABRSM grade 3 Jazz syllabus, with my enthusiasm growing and building with every lesson. He is not just an exceptional pianist with a graceful skill, but he has encyclopaedic knowledge spanning all conceivable aspects of the piano, across all of its styles and iterations, and I find myself learning about new artists, techniques, interpretations and arrangements in every lesson. His infectious enthusiasm for music has certainly passed on to me, and I find myself with the best guide to all these new discoveries. He now has a new purpose-built piano teaching room, with great acoustics - Y Caban Piano (The Piano Cabin), at which I had the singular honour of being the first student. It is easily found, just 3 to 4 minutes from Tesco in Port Talbot - a very short but pleasant drive up the Afan Valley. I cannot recommend Dave highly enough, and whatever your level or background, he will have the ability to enhance your love and appreciation of the piano.”</image:title>

<image:caption>This 6-page CD package includes award-winning saxophonist/author Simon Spillett’s liner notes… “… Jones in bursting, cork-out-of-the-bottle form … vibrant early sessions … timeless, life-filled jazz… … One of the most pleasant discoveries to be had in hearing these unearthed tapes is that they find room for other musicians who were then mainstays of the British jazz ‘circuit’. Some of them are familiar (the late percussion maestro Robin Jones, the legendary session bassist Herbie Flowers), others are known mainly only to other players, like the lyrical blind trumpeter/flugel-hornist Nick Hill, whose Chet Baker-ish playing here might confuse a Blindfold Test victim (Lone Star), or the late bassist Mike Harris, who, as they say, ‘played with them all’ and, as his showing here proves, did so very deservedly.” (Simon Spillett, July 2021). “Really fantastic sound, and wonderful playing from everyone” (award-winning bassist/composer Ashley John Long, July 2021)</image:caption>

      <image:title>Discography - ‘Resonance’ album</image:title>
<image:caption>"There's a lightly stepping, cinematic charm to pianist Jones's outstanding compositions here, especially those featuring the Mavron String Quartet. The catchy opener, 'The Metro', could be the score to a stylish French thriller, while '5 to 3 on Friday' suggests 1960s social realism.” (Phil Johnson, The Independent on Sunday 29/07/2012) “Jones is a gifted melodist" (Trevor Hodgett, 'R2' magazine Sept/Oct 2012) "… swinging post-Blue Note tunes that are exemplars of musical logic, integrity and effective variation" (Mark Gilbert, Jazz Journal Nov 2012). “…the Dave Jones Quartet has been pushing musical boundaries with its amalgamation of various musical styles to create a unique jazz hybrid.” (R2 Magazine, 2012)</image:caption>

<image:title>Discography - ‘Journeys’ album (The London Evening Standard’s Jazz CD of the week)…</image:title>
<image:caption>“…Port Talbot’s Dave Jones is an extraordinary pianist. He swings with a warmth, grace, and vitality that recalls Horace Silver and McCoy Tyner. He also writes soulful originals and scores them skillfully for horns and occasional strings… Jones the Piano definitely merits wider attention.” (Jack Massarik - Jazz CD of the week Review, London Evening Standard, 13/08/2010) "... the whole CD is immensely enjoyable. More please" (Tony Hall, Jazzwise 22/10/2010) “Cerebral jazz from a growing master” (Keith Ames, The Musician: Journal of the Musicians’ Union 11/09/2010) "His tunes are really good, especially 'Nathan's' and the gorgeous title song” (Tony Hall, Jazzwise 22/10/2010)</image:caption>

      <image:title>Discography - ‘Impetus’ album</image:title>
<image:caption>“The great piano trio resurgence continues in soul-jazz and lyrical soft-bop from South Wales. On the marvelously catchy opener, ‘The Leopard’, Jones’ piano style recalls Ramsey Lewis for easy sparkle and lilt, and Herbie Hancock for chordal invention. But over the length of the album, it’s his skills as a writer rather than generic acuity that impress the most, along with the excellent contributions of [brothers] Chris (double bass) and Mark (drums) O’Connor.” (Phil Johnson, The Independent on Sunday, 25th January 2009) “If dynamic variation and subtle felicities of touch and texture are the primary qualities conjured up by 'piano trio', the Dave Jones Trio (leader/composer on piano, bassist Ashley John-Long, drummer Lloyd Haines), launching their CD Impetus, fit that definition. Their material (all by Jones, except the tumultuous closer, Wayne Shorter's 'Black Nile', from 1964's Night Dreamer) ranged easily between the tastefully funky ('The Leopard'), the intensely melodic ('Stimulus') and the immediately memorable ('Welsh Rarebit'), but whatever they played, the trio addressed it in a thoroughly musicianly, considered manner, Jones displaying all the qualities that led to fellow pianist John Pearce commenting, on Jones's debut album, Have You Met Mr. Jones? (Parrot Records,1996), '[He] has a fine technique, rhythmic assurance and a straight-ahead style which makes him a very accomplished pianist indeed.' Amen to that.” (Chris Parker’s Live Review at The Vortex, London 20/07/2009)</image:caption>

<image:caption>A quote (below) from Jazz Journal’s review of Dave’s ‘Crime Scenes and Subterfuge’ production music album for TV/Film. “Listening to these melancholic themes it was easy to picture a trench-coated Humphrey Bogart slipping down a dark side street accompanied by this music. It is, I believe, intended for use in TV drama or films and is certainly ideal for that purpose.”</image:caption>
